Sinrak Mission Station belongs to Dain Parish in the Diocese of Andong and is also a faith community connected with the life of Sinrak Village in Dain-myeon, Uiseong-gun. The Korean Catholic Directory lists Sinrak as a current mission station of the Diocese of Andong, and the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia's entry on Dain Parish likewise includes Sinrak among the parish's mission stations. The Catholic Social Welfare Association of the Diocese of Andong lists “Uiseong Sinrak Village” among the diocese's Hansen-settlement communities and explicitly names its mission station as Sinrak.
For this reason, Sinrak combines the role of an ordinary rural mission station with the memory of a Hansen settlement community. Like other mission stations, it provides a nearby place where local Catholics can continue a life of prayer and worship, but its communal history is also connected with residents who built a settled life amid illness and social prejudice. Current official sources show that Sinrak Mission Station and the village remain linked as a single local community context. It can therefore be understood both as a mission station continuing Catholic life within the pastoral care of Dain Parish and as a place preserving the local memory of the Church's presence alongside people who experienced sickness and social exclusion.
History & origins
The Korean Catholic Directory records the establishment of Sinrak Mission Station in 1962. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that the Catholic community in the Dain area began through a Catholic migrant in 1948, developed into Dain Mission Station in 1957, and became a parish in 1961. The 1962 foundation of Sinrak came immediately after this period of parish-centered expansion in the region. Its emergence belongs to the period when Dain Parish, established on May 25, 1961, was organizing Catholic communities across the surrounding rural area. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia lists Sinrak together with Sinsan, Sanggwang, and other mission stations under Dain Parish, confirming that Sinrak formed part of the rural mission network that took shape soon after the establishment of the parish.
The ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the area also changed after Dain Parish was formed. The parish first developed within the structures of the Diocese of Daegu, and when the Diocese of Andong was established on May 29, 1969, Dain became part of the new diocese. Sinrak Mission Station consequently entered the pastoral structure of the Diocese of Andong as a mission of Dain Parish. Published Church history provides a reasonably clear picture of this expansion of the parish and its mission network, but it does not identify in detail which individual founded Sinrak in 1962 or what building was first used.
Another historical feature that can be verified today is Sinrak's connection with a Hansen settlement. The Catholic Social Welfare Association of the Diocese of Andong lists Uiseong Sinrak Village and Sinrak Mission Station together within its current overview of settlement communities. Public sources, however, do not establish precisely how the chronology of the village's settlement and the 1962 foundation of the mission station intersected. The history can therefore be stated safely up to this point: a mission station founded in 1962 under Dain Parish continued within the rural pastoral network of the Diocese of Andong and is today connected with the faith community of a Hansen settlement.
