Seomyeon Mission

History & origins

The Catholic community in Seomyeon is remembered as having begun with prayer in a home before a formal mission station existed. According to testimonies collected by the Diocese of Andong, around 1959 three brothers who had moved from Ansan in Gyeonggi Province prayed and sang hymns each evening. A neighbor who became curious asked whether he could join them, and the gathering gradually widened. The Korean Catholic Directory records the establishment of Seomyeon Mission Station in 1960, placing the formal organization of the mission community in this period of early growth. Diocesan testimony also remembers that the number of people receiving catechesis and baptism then grew quickly, at one point reaching about eighty baptisms in a year.

The early believers then worked together to secure a separate place for the mission. Diocesan testimony states that difficulties arose over privately owned land, after which one Catholic offered his own land and a mission building was erected there. That building served for many years as the local place for prayer and mission-station services. In this mountainous region, where travel to the parish church was difficult, the faithful continued the community even when a priest was not present by taking turns leading the mission-station service. The early mission was therefore not simply a place to wait for a priest; it became a local center where lay Catholics took responsibility for prayer and shared the faith they had learned in order to sustain community life.

In 2003, a new building replaced the one that had long served the community. The Diocese of Andong's mission-station record states that the project was carried out after requests from Catholics in the Uljin area with assistance from the Korea Water Resources Corporation side, and that the building was completed on December 23, 2003. The history of Seomyeon can therefore be traced from a small gathering around evening prayer and hymns in a home, through the welcome of neighbors, the donation of land and shared responsibility of local believers, to the creation of a dedicated prayer space and its later renewal for a new period.
