Seoman Mission Station

History & origins

The Korean Catholic Directory records the establishment of Seoman Mission Station in 1956. At the time, Naeseo-myeon was a rural area where travel to the parish church was difficult, and testimonies collected by the diocese likewise describe a community that maintained its faith under challenging transportation conditions. Even before a stable mission building was available, local Catholics gathered nearby for prayer and looked for ways to remain connected with the parish, laying the foundations of the community.

According to the Diocese of Andong's mission-station records, evangelization in the area gained momentum in 1963 through the missionary activity of Park Gye-hak Augustine, then a lay missionary leader of Seomun-dong Parish. A dispatched catechist taught the faith in the guest room of Kim Gye-jo in Guman-ri. The faithful learned catechism and held mission-station services there, and later built a small thatched structure on land donated by Kim Gye-jo, spreading straw mats on the floor for common prayer. This process shows that the mission station did not begin as a building; rather, a community formed around catechesis and prayer and gradually created a space it needed.

In 1965, skilled parishioners from Hamchang Parish and local Catholics worked together to complete a dedicated mission building. The rural population later declined and the community at times became very small, but diocesan testimony remembers believers praying to preserve the mission station and continuing the community together with Catholics who later moved into the area. The mission leader recalled discovering after moving to the countryside that a mission station was nearby and then joining the community, while the remaining older Catholics remembered the participation of new members as an occasion for the mission to regain vitality. The history of Seoman is therefore significant not merely for its foundation date, but for the continuity of lay participation—from catechism in a family room and mission services to donated land, communal construction, and the preservation of a place of faith even with very few members.
