Seokbo Mission

History & origins

The Korean Catholic Directory records June 21, 1964, as the establishment date of Seokbo Mission Station. Testimonies from local Catholics collected by the Diocese of Andong, however, show that a faith community already existed in Seokbo before that date. When there was no formal mission building, believers moved among different homes to pray together and hold mission-station services, and when necessary they traveled to Yeongyang church or Ipam Mission Station to participate in Mass and the sacraments. The formal date thus marks the point at which an already existing community of faith took more definite shape as a mission station.

At the time, Yeongyang was a considerable distance from Seokbo and modern transportation was unavailable. Testimonies preserved by the diocese recall believers packing food, carrying oil lamps, and walking at night over mountain paths, with the difficult route making the journey to Yeongyang a lengthy one. This travel was more than an inconvenience: it was a practical condition the community had to bear in order to receive the sacraments and attend Mass. Establishing a mission space closer to home therefore became an urgent part of sustaining Catholic life in the area.

When the mission station was being built, parishioners contributed through a “grain-saving movement,” setting aside small portions of barley in summer and rice in winter for the construction. The grain did not come from one household making a large contribution, but from many families setting aside small portions from ordinary life. The diocese preserves this memory as a central part of the building story, showing how closely the history of the structure was tied to the daily sacrifice of the community. The memory of sharing grain from modest rural households shows that the mission was not simply a finished facility provided from outside but a space created through the sacrifice and participation of local believers. The history of Seokbo links three stages of local faith in sequence: common prayer in homes, long journeys for Mass and the sacraments, and the creation of a prayer space through concrete acts of sharing in daily life.
