Sangoe Mission Station

The origin of Sanggoe Mission Station is estimated to date to around 1910. A 2026 feature on the mission station, citing the Andong Catholic History produced by the diocesan historical institute, reports that Benedict Jeong Haeng-cheol, then living in Sanggoe-ri, held communal Catholic prayer in his home. The same article cautions that the beginning of prayer in a private home cannot automatically be equated with the formal establishment of a mission station, so the earliest date is best retained cautiously as “around 1910.”

The community obtained a dedicated building much later, in 1973. On July 22, 1980, however, torrential rain caused widespread destruction in Gaeun, Nongam, and Maseong, and the Sanggoe chapel was completely destroyed. Bishop René Dupont of Andong visited the affected region and called on parishes throughout the diocese and Catholics nationwide to help with recovery, while the parish and mission faithful celebrated Mass amid the ruins and prepared to rebuild.

Reconstruction was funded through disaster relief money, donations from Seomun-dong Parish in Sangju, contributions from the diocesan charitable association, and diocesan project funds. With a total cost of about eight million won, a concrete-brick building of about 30 pyeong was erected on a 128-pyeong site. The rebuilt chapel was dedicated on October 3, 1981, in a ceremony presided over by Bishop Dupont.

The history of Sanggoe thus moves from a community said to have begun in a private home more than a century ago, to the creation of its own chapel, and then to destruction by natural disaster and rebuilding through wider diocesan solidarity. The reconstruction of 1980–1981 especially shows that the mission chapel was not simply a village property but a place of faith sustained through the support of the parish and the broader Church. The reconstruction record is also significant because recovery did not depend on a single source of support. The mission community and parish were joined by diocesan charitable funds and donations from another parish, while the bishop appealed to Catholics nationwide for solidarity. The 1981 building can therefore be read not merely as a replacement after flood damage, but as the result of multiple Catholic communities joining together to rebuild one rural mission station.
