Sangchon Chapel

History & origins

The history of Sangchon Mission Station reaches back to October 1950, during the Korean War. According to material published by the Diocese of Andong, Catholics began communal prayer in a tile-roofed house in Naegok-ri, then part of Nakdong County. In the immediate postwar period, Catholic relief supplies reached the area and increased contact between local residents and the Church, providing part of the setting in which the mission community continued.

A dedicated mission chapel was built in August 1967. Father Min Gong-do, a German Benedictine missionary of Waegwan Abbey, purchased land in Sangchon-ri and constructed the building. About seventeen years after worship had begun in a private house, the community finally had a space of its own. Two murals later painted by Father André Bouton also became a distinctive part of the chapel’s heritage.

After more than half a century of use, the mission station suffered a fire on January 15, 2025. An electrical fault associated with heating equipment was suspected. Meeting rooms, the sacristy, and other support spaces were badly burned, while the church itself suffered soot and water damage during firefighting. No one was injured, and the two murals by Father Bouton escaped major damage.

The fire made clear that Sangchon was not merely an aging rural building but a place containing the prayers and shared life of several generations. From house prayer in 1950 and the construction of the chapel in 1967 to decades of communal life and the fire and restoration challenge of 2025, its history reflects both the endurance of a postwar rural Catholic community and the ongoing task of preserving its heritage. The seventeen years between 1950 and 1967 show that the Sangchon community existed before it possessed a dedicated chapel. Catholic life that began with house prayer during the war continued amid postwar relief and local mission activity, and only later gained a permanent space through the Benedictine missionary’s purchase of land and construction. This sequence prevents Sangchon from being understood simply as a building erected in 1967.
