Sageun Mission

History & origins

Catholic directory records give September 1957 as the establishment date of Sageun Mission Station. Located in Yeongsun-myeon, Mungyeong, it was one of the rural Catholic communities formed in the postwar period, when mission stations were being established across the region. The official and near-official sources currently available, however, do not allow the details of its earliest foundation or the successive changes to its building to be reconstructed year by year.

Sageun later became a mission station under Mojeon-dong Parish. A recent diocesan oral-history account explains that as the number of Catholics at Sageun, Oryong, and Mareung declined, a former parish priest proposed that the three communities gather together for Mass in rotation. This changed a pattern in which each mission station had Mass only about once a month into one in which the three communities traveled to one another and assembled more frequently.

The parish community became part of this adaptation. Parish groups such as the Marian association and the men’s association joined the mission Masses, while the choir provided liturgical support. Shared meals after Mass were common before the COVID-19 pandemic but were later adjusted. Sageun’s more recent history can therefore be read as a transition from isolated rural mission communities toward a cooperative model in which neighboring mission stations and the parish seek continuity through common liturgy. The reliable sources currently available do not fill the long gap between the recorded month of establishment and the community’s recent operating model. It is therefore more responsible not to infer intermediate moves, jurisdictional changes, or membership figures, but to connect only the verified points and describe the extent to which the community has evolved toward its present cooperative pattern.
