History & origins

The oldest strand in the history of Sabeol-Toegang is the Toegang community. The Diocese of Andong’s parish chronology records that Toegang Parish was established on September 24, 1922, under the former name “Mulmi.” The current diocesan parish page also describes Toegang as the earliest parish established in what is now the Diocese of Andong. As pastoral boundaries later changed, Toegang became a mission station of Hamchang Parish, while Sabeol Mission Station belonged to Gyerim-dong Parish.

The present Toegang church building dates from 1956. The National Heritage Portal records it as a 1956 structure and states that it was designated a Gyeongsangbuk-do Cultural Heritage Material on May 7, 2007. Its owner and managing body is the Diocese of Andong Foundation. The building thus became the principal physical link connecting the long history of the Toegang community with the present.

In the twenty-first century, the two mission communities were reorganized into a single pastoral unit. According to the historical archive of the Diocese of Andong, the Sabeol-Toegang quasi-parish was established on July 1, 2003, by joining the Sabeol and Toegang mission stations, with Father Kolbe Lee Jun-geon as its first pastor. Two rural communities that had previously belonged to different parishes were thus united in one quasi-parish.

The Sabeol-Toegang quasi-parish was elevated to full parish status on July 11, 2007. This brought together within one parish the older parish tradition that began at Toegang in 1922, the later history of the two communities as mission stations, and their integration in the 2000s. The present name “Sabeol-Toegang” itself preserves the history of that union. The years 2003 and 2007 mark different stages. The diocesan historical archive clearly distinguishes July 1, 2003, as the establishment of the quasi-parish and July 11, 2007, as its elevation to parish status. This distinction shows that Sabeol-Toegang spent about four years consolidating a shared pastoral structure as a quasi-parish before becoming a full parish.
