History & origins

The recent institutional history of the Pungyang community is recorded relatively clearly in the Diocese of Andong’s parish table. The diocese first notes Pungyang as a “Rural Mission Parish, July 1, 2008,” and gives December 9, 2025 as its present parish establishment date. This shows that Pungyang did not begin in the same form as an ordinary parish, but was first organized as a missionary pastoral community closely tied to rural realities before taking its place in the diocese’s regular parish structure.

The designation “Rural Mission Parish” in 2008 is a key to understanding Pungyang. The Diocese of Andong covers a broad rural territory and has long shown pastoral concern for farmers, life, and agriculture. Within that context, Pungyang developed as a place where Catholic faith and rural life could be held together. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea still lists the Pungyang Rural Mission Church Education Center as a separate facility, indicating that the rural-mission identity has continued even after the community’s institutional status changed.

The current diocesan table, which records December 9, 2025 as the parish establishment date, marks a new stage in the community’s development. The public sources do not provide every administrative step or decision behind that transition, but the overall sequence is clear: a rural mission parish beginning in 2008 and a regular parish status recorded in 2025. The history of Pungyang Parish can therefore be understood as a gradual development into a stable parish community while preserving a distinctive pastoral commitment to rural mission.

This institutional change does not mean that Pungyang’s rural-mission identity disappeared. The Church’s current official listings still retain the expression “Rural Mission Church” in the name of its education center, showing that the newer parish status and the earlier missionary orientation continue together. The institution changed, but the pastoral aim of relating the Gospel to rural life remains an important line of historical continuity.
