Pungsan Mission Station

History & origins

A diocesan feature on mission communities places the origins of Pungsan before the formal establishment date found in the Catholic directory. According to the diocesan account, Matthew Kim Dal-seo and James Im Su-geun, who had lived in Gaeun, Mungyeong, moved in the mid-1930s and made their living by producing pottery. Around 1936 Kim moved again to Hari in Pungsan and established a pottery workshop. The diocesan record explains that a self-forming Catholic community grew in connection with this movement and became the beginning of Pungsan Mission Station.

The Catholic Church directory records the formal establishment of Pungsan in 1942. The diocesan account of a community forming in the 1930s and the directory’s 1942 date do not necessarily conflict; together they can be read as a sequence in which a Catholic community first took root and the mission station was subsequently established in a more formal way. The record that the early Catholics supported themselves through pottery—an occupation also closely associated with persecuted Catholic communities in Korean Church history—shows that Pungsan was shaped by believers who had migrated from elsewhere.

When the Diocese of Andong was established in 1969, Catholic communities in the Andong region, including Pungsan, continued their pastoral life within the new diocesan structure. Pungsan remains a mission station of the diocese today and forms part of the network of mission communities maintained across its broad rural territory. The public sources do not provide a complete record of every later renovation or relocation, but the overall sequence is clear: the formation of a Catholic community in the 1930s, a recorded establishment date in 1942, and continued life within the Diocese of Andong.

The history of Pungsan is therefore less the history of a single building than the story of migrating Catholics who joined livelihood and faith, formed a local community, and gradually established a mission station that has continued to the present. In this sense it provides a concrete example of how Catholic mission communities took root in the rural areas of northern Gyeongsangbuk-do.
