History & origins

The Diocese of Andong was established in 1969 to serve the northern part of Gyeongsangbuk-do, and in the years that followed it continued to refine its pastoral network by locality. The diocese’s official chronology records that Punggi Parish was erected on January 10, 1980, with Father Peter Ahn Deok-hwa appointed as its first pastor. This provides a clear date for the point at which the Catholic community of Punggi was organized as an independent parish unit.

Since its establishment, Punggi Parish has continued to function as a center of Catholic life in the northern Yeongju and Sobaeksan area. It remains a parish of the Northern District in the current diocesan structure, showing the continuity of the pastoral foundation created in 1980. The present Catholic directory also lists St. Mary’s Childcare Center at the parish site, indicating that parish life centered on liturgy and the sacraments is also connected with education and care.

The public diocesan sources do not provide a complete record of every later building project or internal change. Even so, two points are well documented: Punggi was established as a parish relatively early in the history of the Diocese of Andong, and it continues today as an independent parish of the Northern District. Its history therefore forms part of the wider effort of the diocese to create pastoral centers close to local communities across its broad rural and mountainous territory.

The establishment of Punggi in 1980 also came within the broader process by which the Diocese of Andong refined its regional pastoral network during the decade after its creation in 1969. Seen alongside the present cooperative structure of the Northern District, the founding of Punggi can be understood as one stage in establishing an independent pastoral center for the northern Yeongju area.
