Oenam Mission Station

History & origins

According to the Diocese of Andong's mission-station oral-history project, Catholics in the Oenam area were already gathering around 1960, at times celebrating Mass under a tent. In the social setting of postwar relief distribution, more local residents came into contact with the Catholic Church, and the diocesan interviews state that Oenam Mission Station was established on March 1, 1962. The Catholic Directory of Korea also gives 1962 as the year of establishment, supporting this basic chronology.

Early Catholic life continued in a very simple space with earthen walls and a wooden floor. Memories preserved by the diocese describe people learning catechism in the cold and making time for Mass and Church activities while also carrying the burdens of farming and childcare. During the 1970s, many younger residents left for the cities, and the number of Catholics declined as the rural community experienced depopulation and aging.

Oenam nevertheless did not disappear. Through changes in parish jurisdiction it continued to preserve a local Catholic presence and is now listed by the Diocese of Andong under Gaeundong Parish. Its history is best understood not through monumental buildings or dramatic events, but through the experience of rural Catholics who continued prayer and communal faith across generations despite difficult living conditions and demographic change.
