Oeo Gongsu

History & origins

The Catholic Directory of Korea records 1964 as the establishment year of Oeeo Mission Station. In the Diocese of Andong's mission-station interviews, local Catholics remember the beginnings of the faith community in connection with a place called Yonggigol near the village entrance, followed by a period when the railway and mining economy drew new residents into the area and many Catholics formed a community. These memories suggest that the mission station emerged not simply from the construction of a building but from the gathering of a faith community amid local demographic and economic change.

Once the mission community was established, it operated a Sunday school and catechism classes, while members divided responsibilities among themselves. The memories of children's formation, catechesis, liturgical preparation, and daily administration show how a small community without a resident priest could carry out the practical life of the Church through lay participation.

Over time, changes in mining and local industry combined with rural depopulation, and the number of active Catholics declined. Diocesan interviews recall that many residents had once been Catholic, whereas later migration and inactive membership reduced the size of the community. Oeeo nevertheless remains a mission station of Mungyeong Parish, preserving the memory of a village faith community that took shape in the mid-twentieth century and continues within the local Church today.
