Nong-eun Retreat Center is a retreat and educational facility operated by the Diocese of Andong and is used for diocesan retreats and education. Its primary identity is therefore not that of an ordinary parish church, but of a diocesan facility supporting spiritual formation and education.
The center was conceived with multiple functions, combining a retreat house, educational venue, and training center, and has been used for various forms of Catholic formation and community gatherings. In addition to retreats for individuals and smaller communities, it can host students and Church groups for education and training, giving the geographically broad Diocese of Andong a shared place where people can gather to pray and learn. The name “Nong-eun” is linked to the courtesy name of Hong Yu-han, whom the Diocese of Andong honors as an important root of its local faith history. The center is thus best understood not merely as accommodation or an event venue, but as a place created by the diocese for prayer, learning, and communal reflection.
History & origins
Nong-eun Retreat Center was created as one of the projects commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Diocese of Andong and was dedicated on September 22, 1997. The dedication took place within a wider period in which the diocese was expanding facilities for faith formation and community life through its anniversary projects.
From the beginning, the center was not designed for a single purpose. It combined the functions of an educational center, retreat house, and training facility. By providing space for retreats and formation for diocesan Catholics as well as training programs for students and various groups, it developed into a shared diocesan facility capable of hosting programs that individual parishes could not easily accommodate on their own. In this way, an anniversary project became more than a commemorative building: it developed into a practical foundation for continuing faith formation and spiritual life in the diocese.
The name “Nong-eun” comes from the courtesy name of Hong Yu-han, whom the Diocese of Andong honors as Korea’s earliest Catholic ascetic. The foundation of the retreat center therefore brought together the diocese’s anniversary project with a symbolic remembrance of the roots of faith in the region. The diocese continues to list it officially as a retreat and educational venue, showing continuity between its original purpose and its present function.
