Namseong-dong Catholic Church

Namseong-dong Parish was established in 1963 after being separated from the existing parish in Sangju. The exact establishment date differs among the surviving records, but the broader sequence is clear: growth in the Sangju urban area created the need for a new parish, and a separate parish community was formed at Namseong-dong. Fr. Seuferling served as the first pastor.

In its early years, Namseong-dong Parish combined liturgical and catechetical work with responses to local social needs. The Catholic Encyclopedia records that during the 1960s the parish used overseas aid to distribute food to people in need, supported treatment and medicine for people affected by Hansen’s disease, and expanded its pastoral reach by establishing mission stations in surrounding places such as Sinsang, Yongpo, and Sangchon.

When the Diocese of Andong was established in 1969, Namseong-dong Parish became part of the new diocese. During the 1970s it strengthened devotional and community life through the construction of a Marian statue, a parish bulletin, and neighborhood groups. In the 1980s it responded to a shortage of formation space by adding catechetical rooms and a hall and by repairing the church roof. Joint Masses and activities with other Sangju parishes also broadened ties among Catholics in the region. As the urban area of Sangju expanded, Gyerim-dong Parish was separated from the territories of Namseong-dong and Seomun-dong in 1990, and in 1995 several mission stations were transferred to Oksan Parish, further adjusting parish jurisdiction.
