Nakseo Mission Station belongs to Seomun-dong Parish in the Diocese of Andong and is the local Catholic community for the Nakseo area of Naeseo-myeon, Sangju. Together with the Seoman and Namjeok mission stations, it forms part of Seomun-dong Parish’s pastoral care for surrounding rural communities and connects Catholics in Naeseo-myeon with the parish.
Its importance lies less in scale than in maintaining continuity of Catholic community life within the locality. In a rural setting where travel to the parish church can be difficult, a mission station provides a place for visiting pastoral ministry, including Mass and the sacraments, as well as a nearby space where Catholics can pray together and sustain their community relationships. Nakseo Mission Station illustrates how Catholic life in the Sangju area has connected a central parish with surrounding villages.
History & origins
Nakseo Mission Station was established in 1957. At the time, Sangju Parish was being rebuilt and expanded under Benedictine pastoral care from Waegwan. Catholic historical material records that Fr. Eligius Kohler, while developing parish facilities, also established mission stations in several villages, and specifically names Nakseo among them. This supports placing the origin of Nakseo Mission Station within the wider expansion of rural mission work around Sangju in that period.
In 1963, Namseong-dong Parish was separated in the town of Sangju, and the existing Sangju Parish was renamed Seomun-dong Parish. Nakseo Mission Station subsequently continued as a mission station of Seomun-dong Parish, and the same affiliation is confirmed in the Diocese of Andong’s current official list.
When the Diocese of Andong was established in 1969, the Sangju and Mungyeong regions were incorporated into the new diocese. Nakseo Mission Station remained within this diocesan structure as a local Catholic community. Public sources do not establish the precise location of its earliest building or a reliable chronology of later rebuilding, so this account is limited to the verified founding and changes in jurisdiction.
