Nakdong Mission Station

History & origins

Nakdong Mission Station was established in 1959. At that time, the Sangju and Mungyeong area was undergoing an expansion and reorganization of rural Catholic communities under the pastoral influence of the Waegwan Apostolic Vicariate and Benedictine missionaries. Nakdong Mission Station can be placed within that wider missionary growth as a local base that allowed Catholics in Nakdong-myeon to maintain their faith close to home.

In 1963, Namseong-dong Parish was separated from the existing parish in Sangju, reorganizing the pastoral structure of the area. The sources reviewed do not establish the exact date on which jurisdiction over Nakdong Mission Station changed, but the Diocese of Andong’s current official list places it under Namseong-dong Parish, showing that it subsequently continued within that parish’s network of mission stations.

When the Diocese of Andong was established in 1969, the Sangju and Mungyeong regions were incorporated into the new diocese. The history of Nakdong Mission Station thus continued through the late-1950s expansion of rural mission work, the restructuring of parishes in Sangju, and the creation of the Diocese of Andong. Reliable public sources were not found for a detailed building chronology or the names of the earliest local leaders, so those points are not asserted here.
