About this place
Mojeon-dong Catholic Church is the parish church of Mojeon-dong Parish in the Mungyeong district of the Catholic Diocese of Andong and serves as a center for Mass, the sacraments, and community life for Catholics in and around Mojeon-dong. The Catholic directory of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea records the Korean Martyr Saints as the parish patrons and lists three mission stations. It thus serves as a local pastoral center connecting the parish community in the urban part of Mungyeong with nearby rural mission stations.
The dedication to the Korean Martyr Saints also resonates naturally with the memory of Catholic villages and martyr faith that remains throughout the Mungyeong region. Mojeon-dong is not a facility intended only for pilgrims but a living parish community where Mass and the sacraments are celebrated in everyday life, and together with its mission stations it helps connect Catholic life across urban and rural areas.
History & origins
Mojeon-dong Parish was established on September 1, 1982. Both the Catholic directory of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea and a Catholic Peace Newspaper report on the parish’s fortieth anniversary give the same establishment date. With the creation of the new parish, Catholics in the Mojeon-dong area of Mungyeong gained a stable framework for organizing their faith life around an independent parish community.
The parish later came to have responsibility for Mareung, Sageun, and Oryong mission stations, forming a pastoral structure that connected an urban parish with rural mission-station communities. The mission stations provided places where Catholics could gather near their local communities, while the parish served as the central link through priests, liturgy, and sacramental life.
In September 2022, a Mass was celebrated for the fortieth anniversary of the parish, and Catholics received the sacrament of Confirmation as the community commemorated its history. The path from the parish’s establishment in 1982 to its fortieth anniversary shows how Mojeon-dong Parish has continued its communal life together with its mission stations through changes in the Mungyeong region.
