Modong Mission Station is a Catholic mission-station community connected with Hwaeryeong Parish in the Diocese of Andong, where Catholics in the rural area of Modong-myeon, Sangju, continue their faith life close to home. The Catholic directory of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea registers Modong as a mission station of the Diocese of Andong, and Catholic material on Hwaeryeong Parish likewise identifies Modong as one of its mission stations.
A mission station is a small local community that helps Catholics who live at a distance from the parish church continue prayer, liturgy, and fellowship. Modong Mission Station has also continued its Catholic life within its relationship to Hwaeryeong Parish and neighboring mission-station communities, even as rural population changes have altered its scale. It is therefore best understood not as an independent parish but as a local Catholic base belonging to Hwaeryeong Parish.
History & origins
The Catholic directory of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea records August 30, 1962, as the establishment date of Modong Mission Station. This date provides a clear point showing that the Catholic community in the Modong area had been organized and established as a mission station by the early 1960s.
Modong Mission Station subsequently continued as a rural mission station connected with Hwaeryeong Parish. A 2019 article in the monthly Legio Mariae on Hwaeryeong Parish and Moseo Mission Station notes that a Legion of Mary praesidium was newly established at Modong as well, showing the continuation of lay devotion and community activity within the small mission station. Since its establishment in 1962, Modong has continued to support the faith life of local Catholics within the Hwaeryeong parish structure despite changes in the rural environment.
