Mareung Mission Station belongs to Mojeon-dong Parish in the Catholic Diocese of Andong and is a small rural faith community in Yeongsun-myeon, Mungyeong, where Catholics can gather near their homes for prayer and Mass. The Catholic directory of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea registers Mareung as a mission station of the Diocese of Andong, and materials on Mojeon-dong Parish likewise identify Mareung, Sageun, and Oryong as communities under the parish.
Today Mareung Mission Station continues its Catholic life within the parish structure together with the neighboring Sageun and Oryong mission stations. Even in an environment of declining rural population, it sustains liturgy and fellowship through its relationship with the parish and neighboring mission stations, providing local Catholics with a nearby place where they can pray together and meet one another.
History & origins
The Catholic directory of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea records August 1960 as the establishment date of Mareung Mission Station. This predates the establishment of the present Mojeon-dong Parish and shows that Catholics in the Mareung area of Yeongsun-myeon had already formed a mission-station community within their local area.
Mojeon-dong Parish was established on September 1, 1982, and Mareung Mission Station today continues its Catholic life under that parish together with Sageun and Oryong mission stations. This structure links the urban parish in Mungyeong with mission-station communities in Yeongsun-myeon and other rural areas within a single pastoral relationship.
Recent diocesan material describes the three mission stations responding to a decline in Catholic population by gathering for Mass at one another’s stations and receiving support from the parish community. Even as rural population and community size have changed since its establishment, Mareung Mission Station has continued its Catholic life in cooperation with neighboring mission stations and the parish.
