Jeongsang-dong Cathedral

History & origins

Jeongsang-dong Parish was created as the urban area of Andong expanded and new residential communities formed in the south of the city, requiring the pastoral responsibilities of Yongsang-dong Parish to be shared. Both the Catholic Times and the Diocese of Andong's chronology record that Jeongsang-dong Parish was separated from Yongsang-dong Parish and established on 1 June 2004, with Fr. Callistus Kim Jong-seop as its first pastor. The new community was still small, but as an independent parish it began to organize its own Masses, sacramental life, catechesis, and pastoral structures. Catholic Times reported 113 households and 273 Catholics at the time, showing a small community building the foundations of a new parish.

Almost immediately after the parish was established, work proceeded to provide a permanent church. Catholic Times reported that the building was made possible through the community's preparation and support from the “Thomas Association,” which assisted parishes and mission stations with construction needs. The new church was scheduled to be dedicated by Bishop John Chrysostom Kwon Hyuk-ju on 1 December 2004. Worship space, a rectory, and catechetical rooms were included, giving the new parish a stable setting for liturgy and formation. The short period from parish establishment to church dedication shows how quickly the new community created a basic pastoral framework.

After the church was dedicated, Jeongsang-dong Parish continued its identity as a parish dedicated to St. Francis. The Diocese of Andong still explicitly describes Jeongsang-dong as a church dedicated to the saint, showing that the parish erection and church dedication of 2004 were not simply an expansion of facilities but the beginning of a defined spiritual identity. A small new parish gained its own church and formation space and continued to shape its communal identity around its patron; in this sense, the parish's early history remains directly connected with the character of the community today.
