Ipam Mission Station

History & origins

The history of Ipam Mission Station is connected with mission prayers first held in a lay Catholic home. According to testimony collected by the Diocese of Andong, one of the community's earliest Catholics was baptized in Gangwon Province as a young man and later returned to his home village of Ipam, where he continued practicing the faith. Because there was no separate mission station, his house became the place for common prayer and mission services; as the number of Catholics grew, the group also used the village hall. Ipam thus shows a typical rural pattern in which a community of people and prayer formed first, and a permanent Catholic space became necessary only as that community endured.

Local Catholics contributed their own labor to create the first mission building. In the diocesan interviews, an elderly member remembers young men bringing timber down from the mountains while women carried and worked the earth, and dates this common building effort to 1964. The story shows that the mission station was not simply constructed through an outside institutional project but through the labor and offerings of the local Catholic community. The experience of creating a place for prayer with their own hands became an important memory shaping the identity of Ipam Mission Station.

When the first building became old and too small, a new mission building was constructed in 1982. The diocesan account explains that the old structure was later removed and an education building was placed on its site, allowing the mission property to serve not only worship but also formation. The community has continued in connection with Yeongyang Parish while carrying the memories of older Catholics and welcoming a younger generation. Ipam's history can therefore be traced from prayer in a family home, through the communal construction of its first building, to a renewed mission and educational space—a history in which the voluntary participation of lay Catholics sustained rural Catholic life.
