Hwabuk Mission

History & origins

The history of the Catholic community in Hwabuk is connected with the growth of mission stations in rural areas after the Korean War. Testimonies collected in diocesan material state that refugee clergy worked in the region after the war and that several mission stations, including Hwabuk, were established with support from Waegwan Abbey, which was then involved in pastoral care in the area. Local Catholics also recalled that materials brought by the monastery were used in early mission-station construction. This background places Hwabuk within the postwar expansion of rural mission work and monastic support.

As rural migration and declining Catholic numbers continued, however, the Hwabuk community weakened to the point that its activity nearly disappeared. Later a small group of local Catholics decided to establish the mission station again, beginning worship and prayer gatherings in a believer's home. To secure a site and construction funds, they gathered donations and even made goods to sell, while Catholics from neighboring mission stations contributed labor and financial support.

The rebuilding of the mission station thus combined voluntary offerings from local believers with help from the parish. Testimonies in the diocesan source describe a leading local Catholic, support from the parish priest and benefactors, and the eventual provision of both worship and education spaces. They also recount that Legion of Mary and evangelization activities resumed and that the number of Catholics began to recover.

Hwabuk's history is therefore not a simple chronology of one building remaining unchanged. It is a story of postwar foundation, decline of the community, and rebuilding by the faithful. The mission station today preserves the memory of local Catholics who repeatedly worked to restore their community of faith.
