Hamchang Church

History & origins

The roots of the Catholic community in Hamchang reach back to mission stations and local groups of believers that existed before the parish was formally established. The historical archive of the Diocese of Andong records that Hamchang Parish was erected on May 21, 1942, with Father James Lee Gi-su appointed as its first pastor. Church-history material introduced by the diocese also states that Catholics had secured land for a church around 1940, but construction did not proceed smoothly amid the final years of Japanese rule and the disorder that followed liberation. The emergence of the parish thus formed part of the wider growth of Catholic communities in the rural areas of northern Gyeongsang Province.

The Korean War dealt a severe blow to the construction of the church. A building under construction was destroyed and construction materials were lost, forcing the community to begin again. When Father John Jeong Sam-gyu, appointed in 1952, was struggling to finance the work, a parishioner named Lee Yong-u sold a rice field and contributed the proceeds. Through this and the sacrifices of other Catholics, the church was dedicated on November 24, 1954. The dedication is recorded as one of the final official events presided over by Bishop John Choi Deok-hong, then Apostolic Vicar of Daegu.

The parish also engaged in local education rather than limiting its activity to worship space. The diocesan chronology records the opening of Seongmo Kindergarten in 1949, its interruption during the Korean War, and official authorization for Seongmo Higher Civic School in 1961. It records another completion and consecration of Hamchang church facilities in November 1965, showing how the parish continued to rebuild and improve its physical base after the war. These educational initiatives are an important trace of the parish's broader relationship with the local community.

Taken together, this history shows a parish sustained through war and rural social change by the offerings of its faithful, educational work, and pastoral care of mission stations. The accumulated history of faith also helps explain why the Diocese of Andong now presents Hamchang Catholic Church as a pilgrimage church of historical value.
