Hamangdong Catholic Church

History & origins

The official chronology of the Diocese of Andong records that Hamang-dong Parish was established on August 28, 1988, with Father Paul Jeong Sang-eop appointed as its first pastor. The current Catholic Church directory gives the same establishment date, so the beginning of the parish is consistently documented. Hamang-dong later became one of the parishes of the Northern District in the Yeongju area and developed as a community under the patronage of St. Paul Chong Hasang.

The parish’s history is not limited to the growth of its church building and liturgical community. According to diocesan materials, the diocese’s “life-giving agricultural products direct market” began at Hamang-dong Parish on September 11, 2005. The initiative, which directly linked producers and consumers, later spread to a number of parishes in the diocese. Members of Hamang-dong also took part in seasonal farm work to support rural communities facing aging populations and labor shortages.

This development shows how a city parish founded in 1988 gradually widened its pastoral role by connecting urban Catholics with the surrounding rural region. Hamang-dong remains a parish of the Northern District today, centering its life on liturgy and the sacraments while continuing a tradition of solidarity with farmers and life-giving agriculture. Its history can therefore be read as a process of expanding the social practice of faith within the local community after the parish was established.

The diocesan account states that the direct market begun at Hamang-dong later developed into Our Farm life-giving agricultural-product sharing centers in ten parishes of the diocese. The expansion of an initiative from one parish into a diocesan pattern makes this a clear example of local parish engagement influencing other Catholic communities.
