Hagal Mission

History & origins

The Catholic Church directory records the establishment of Hagal Mission Station as “before 1913.” The currently available public sources do not allow the exact founding date or the name of the founder to be identified, but the record is sufficient to confirm that a Catholic community existed in Hagal by the early twentieth century. In rural areas, such mission communities enabled Catholics living at a distance from a parish church to continue their faith life locally.

Oral testimony collected by the Diocese of Andong gives a more concrete picture of how the mission building came into being. Residents recalled that the community already existed when they were young, but there was no separate mission building, so they traveled to nearby Toegang Church. Later, under the leadership of a local mission leader, Catholics in Hagal took part directly in the construction, carrying bricks and working together to build their own mission station. Memories of the exact number of Catholics at the time differ, but the accounts consistently describe the Hagal believers themselves as the people who created the building.

These testimonies show that the history of Hagal cannot be reduced to a single construction date. The community came first, its members continued their faith by traveling to a parish church, and later they pooled their labor to create a local worship space of their own. The Hagal Mission Station that remains today is therefore best understood as the result of a long-lived Catholic community and the shared work of local believers.

The residents also recalled that the Catholic community was not evenly spread across the three neighboring villages of Sanggal, Junggal, and Hagal, but was centered mainly in Hagal itself. This detail shows that the mission station did not grow as an abstract organization covering an administrative area; it grew from the relationships of Catholics in a small village who knew one another and worked together.
