About this place
Gyerim-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Sangju District in the Diocese of Andong, with Saint Paul Chong Hasang as its patron. It is both a parish where Catholics in urban Sangju continue their faith life centered on Mass and the sacraments and a place where social ministry for local neighbors takes place within the parish grounds.
The Diocese of Andong's list of social welfare institutions identifies the free meal center “House of Sharing” at Gyerim-dong Catholic Church as an official facility. The parish has thus related to the surrounding community not only through liturgy and catechesis but also through the concrete care of sharing meals. An important feature of the parish today is that a sacred space of faith and a space of sharing for neighbors continue side by side in the same place.
History & origins
Gyerim-dong Parish was established in the Diocese of Andong on July 15, 1990, with Father Augustine Kim Sang-jin as its first pastor. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia and the history of Seomun-dong Parish describe the background in which Gyerim-dong Parish was formed by dividing the territories of Seomun-dong and Namseong-dong parishes as Sangju became more urbanized and the Catholic population grew.
After the parish took root, its pastoral scope expanded beyond liturgy and catechesis toward concerns of everyday local life. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia's entry on the Diocese of Andong records that beginning in 1992 free meal centers were operated in several places, including Gyerim-dong Parish in Sangju.
This early work of sharing shows how the Gyerim-dong community incorporated care for neighbors into its pastoral life after becoming established as a new parish. The history of Gyerim-dong Catholic Church can therefore be seen as a case in which the division of a parish in response to changes in Sangju's urban living area was followed by an expansion of social ministry toward the local community.
