About this place
Gudam Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Andong located in the rural area of Jibo-myeon, Yecheon-gun. The diocese's 2026 pastoral plan lists Gudam Catholic Church as one of the venues for pastoral meetings of the Uiseong District, confirming that although the church is administratively located in Yecheon-gun, it carries out diocesan pastoral life together with parishes of the Uiseong District.
It is a local parish where Catholics in and around Jibo-myeon form a community centered on Mass and the sacraments. Its essential character today is that of a central place where Catholics in a rural area gather regularly and remain connected with pastoral activity at the district level of the diocese. The detailed process by which the earlier outstation became a parish belongs to the history of this community.
History & origins
The Catholic community of Gudam was formed first as an outstation before it became a parish. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia's history of Mokseong-dong Parish records that Gudam Outstation, then under Mokseong-dong Parish, was elevated to parish status in 1995.
The official chronology of the Diocese of Andong likewise records that Gudam Parish was established in 1995 and that Father Anselm Kim Hak-rok was appointed its first pastor. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia and the diocesan historical archive give different specific dates, but they agree on the essential development that Gudam Outstation became an independent parish in that year.
This elevation marked the transition by which the Gudam community, formerly an outstation under another parish, acquired its own parish pastoral structure. Gudam subsequently continued within the district-based parish organization of the Diocese of Andong as a parish connecting Catholic life across the surrounding rural area.
