About this place
Gonggeom Catholic Church is a rural parish of the Sangju District in the Diocese of Andong, with Saint Joseph the Worker as its patron. It is a parish where Catholics in Gonggeom-myeon form a community centered on Mass and the sacraments, and the choice of the patron saint of workers gives the parish a symbolic link between everyday local life and faith.
The Diocese of Andong's outstation directory lists Seongsimwon Outstation and Euncheok Outstation under Gonggeom Parish. Gonggeom Catholic Church therefore has the character not only of a parish community gathered in one place but also of a pastoral center connecting Catholic communities in surrounding villages. Its important local role lies in a structure that helps Catholics dispersed across a wide rural area continue their faith life through the relationship between parish and outstations.
History & origins
Gonggeom Parish was established in the Diocese of Andong on September 10, 2010. The official parish page and the diocesan historical archive record the same date, and they also confirm that Father Pio Choi Sung-geun began ministry there as the first pastor.
With the establishment of the parish, the Catholic community of Gonggeom acquired an independent parish structure. Within the diocesan outstation system, Seongsimwon Outstation and Euncheok Outstation are connected under Gonggeom Parish, illustrating a structure in which one parish cares for small Catholic communities scattered through a rural area.
The formation of Gonggeom Parish reveals a pattern of rural pastoral organization different from the expansion of a large urban parish. Its historical character lies in the way local outstation communities were maintained while being linked through the parish structure after the parish was established.
