About this place
Gilmaeul Outstation is a Catholic outstation of the Sangju District in the Diocese of Andong and is currently identified in the official diocesan list as “Gyerim-dong Gilmaeul Outstation.” It is not an independent parish but a local community within the pastoral jurisdiction of Gyerim-dong Parish; the official diocesan outstation list gives the same Geumdang 1-gil 2-16 address found in the package.
Gilmaeul Outstation is a place where Catholics in Jungdong-myeon, Sangju, form a local community and continue their faith life in connection with the pastoral care of Gyerim-dong Parish. By maintaining an outstation community in a rural living area distant from the parish church, it offers a present-day example of the long-standing rural outstation ministry of the Diocese of Andong.
History & origins
The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea records 1923 as the year Gilmaeul Outstation was established. This shows that a Catholic community in the form of an outstation existed in the Jungdong-myeon area of Sangju from the first half of the twentieth century. Available reliable public sources do not allow the founder at the time of establishment or the changes in the earliest building to be established with confidence.
Detailed chronology after the early period is not sufficiently documented in public official sources, but the current Diocese of Andong outstation list explicitly places Gilmaeul Outstation under Gyerim-dong Parish. It is therefore possible to confirm the continuity by which the name of the outstation community, recorded as beginning in 1923, remains within the present diocesan pastoral structure.
