Ganggu Catholic Church is a parish in Ganggu-myeon, Yeongdeok-gun, belonging to the East Coast District of the Diocese of Andong. As a local parish in the East Sea coastal living area, it is a central place for the celebration of Mass and the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.
The Diocese of Andong lists the education hall at Ganggu Catholic Church among its diocesan retreat and education venues. The church therefore serves not only as a center of ordinary parish ministry but also as a place that accommodates education and retreat activities for reflecting on and deepening the faith. An important feature of Ganggu Catholic Church is that it brings together the life of a coastal parish community and faith formation at the diocesan level.
History & origins
The Catholic community in Ganggu did not begin as an independent parish but developed as an outstation under Yeongdeok Parish. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia's history of Yeongdeok Parish records the acquisition of land for the Ganggu outstation in the early 1980s and the subsequent construction of an outstation building, showing that a continuing Catholic community and liturgical space existed in Ganggu before it became a parish.
The Diocese of Andong established Ganggu Parish in 2002 and appointed Father Paul Park Yun-jeong as its first pastor. The diocese's parish-establishment table and its historical chronology give different specific dates, but both support the broader development in which a community that had grown as an outstation of Yeongdeok Parish became an independent parish in 2002.
This elevation marked the transition by which the Ganggu community, long nurtured within the wide pastoral territory of Yeongdeok Parish, acquired its own parish structure. As a result, Catholic life in Ganggu moved from an outstation-centered arrangement to one organized around an independent parish.
