Galjeon Matthias Catholic Church is a parish of the Andong District in the Diocese of Andong, located in Pungcheon-myeon, Andong. Its official patron is Blessed Matthias Park Sang-geun, and the name “Matthias” is also part of the church's official name. The combination of the local name and the baptismal name of its patron is itself a distinctive feature of the parish.
Blessed Matthias Park Sang-geun was a native of Mungyeong who was martyred in Sangju. Galjeon Matthias Catholic Church is therefore not only a local parish where Mass and the sacraments are celebrated but also a place where the tradition of martyr faith rooted in the Andong diocesan region is remembered within ordinary parish life. Visitors can understand the identity of the place through the way the local name “Galjeon” and the faith memory expressed by “Matthias” are joined in a single name.
History & origins
Galjeon Matthias Parish was established in the Diocese of Andong in 2016, and the diocesan chronology records Father Pio Choi Sung-geun as its first pastor. The current parish profile and the diocesan historical chronology give different specific dates for its establishment, but they agree that the parish began in 2016.
The parish's name reflects the Diocese of Andong's continuing commemoration of Blessed Matthias Park Sang-geun and his martyr faith. The diocese celebrated a Mass in 2014 marking his beatification, and in 2015 it held a memorial Mass for the martyr Blessed Matthias Park Sang-geun together with the proclamation of him as the diocese's second patron. The newly established parish subsequently incorporated his baptismal name, “Matthias,” into its official name.
In March 2018, the parish celebrated the blessing of Saint Matthias Daycare Center. This is a documented milestone showing that, as the new parish developed its liturgical community, it also established an apostolic space serving local children and families.
