About this place
Gaheung-dong Catholic Church is a parish in Yeongju belonging to the Northern District of the Diocese of Andong. The territory assigned to the parish includes the residential development west of the Seocheon in Gaheung-dong and Jangsu-myeon, forming a community where Catholics in the expanding urban area and surrounding living zone can participate in Mass and the sacraments closer to home.
Its patron is the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Having the Holy Family as patron naturally connects the parish's identity with faith lived within the family and with communal care. Current official records of the Diocese of Andong identify Gaheung-dong as an independent parish of the Northern District, serving as a Catholic center for the western part of Yeongju.
History & origins
The Diocese of Andong established Gaheung-dong Parish on January 16, 2018. According to the Catholic Times, the new parish was separated from Hyucheon-dong Parish and Hamang-dong Parish and was assigned the entire residential development west of the Seocheon in Gaheung-dong, Yeongju, together with Jangsu-myeon. At the time of its establishment, the parish counted 742 Catholics.
Its first Sunday Mass was celebrated on February 4 of the same year, presided over by Bishop John Chrysostom Kwon Hyeok-ju of Andong. This marked the point at which Catholics in the rapidly developing Gaheung-dong area formally began Sunday liturgical life within their newly separated parish community.
Although Gaheung-dong Parish has a relatively short history, the process by which existing parish boundaries were divided and a new parish was created in response to changes in residential patterns and the distribution of Catholics is clearly documented. Its formation is a recent example in the Diocese of Andong of reorganizing a pastoral unit to respond to a changing local living area.
