One activity that characterizes the parish today is its “Woorinong Life Community” and the distribution center for life-giving agricultural products. According to the Diocese of Andong, the parish opened the center on Farmers' Sunday in 2023 and began activities that introduce the Save Our Rural Communities Movement and the life-centered farming of the Catholic Farmers' Association while connecting farmers and consumers. History & origins
Gaewoon-dong Parish was established in the Diocese of Andong on July 5, 2007, with Father Delphino Yang Ho-jun as its first pastor. The diocesan historical archive and the parish-establishment record give the same date, making it possible to identify clearly when this new parish community began in the Sangju area during the 2000s.
After the parish became established, a pastoral structure continued in which Gaewoon-dong Parish cared for the Catholic outstation community in Oenam. The current diocesan outstation list still identifies Oenam Outstation as belonging to Gaewoon-dong Parish, confirming that the connection with the surrounding rural area has been maintained within the diocesan organization since the parish was established.
The documented history of Gaewoon-dong Catholic Church is relatively short, but it clearly shows a pattern of establishing an independent parish and linking it with a nearby outstation so that the parish could provide a pastoral foundation for both the Sangju living area and neighboring rural communities.
