Buseok Mission Station

History & origins

The Catholic community in Buseok existed before the present mission building. According to oral testimony collected by the Diocese of Andong, a Catholic who moved to the area in 1973 remembered that there was no separate mission chapel at the time, so communal prayer was held in the homes of the faithful. While the community was under Punggi Parish, Father Peter An Deok-hwa came to a home twice a month to celebrate Mass.

Older members who hoped to leave a permanent chapel behind saved small portions of rice each time they cooked, gathered leftover grain after harvests, and did piecework such as assembling envelopes to raise building funds. Although some of those pioneers died before seeing the chapel completed, the next generation continued their effort. The faithful appealed to Bishop René Dupont for help in securing land, and their testimony recalls that the jurisdiction was later changed to Hyucheon-dong Parish so that support could be organized more effectively.

The site was purchased in 1988, and after the mission station was transferred to the care of Hyucheon-dong Parish in 1991, preparations for a new building moved forward. The present chapel was completed in 1992 and dedicated on May 17 in a ceremony presided over by the diocesan bishop. A community that had long used aging houses and private homes for worship finally obtained a dedicated chapel through decades of offerings and assistance from the parish.

The formation of Buseok Mission Station illustrates a characteristic pattern in the history of rural Korean Catholic mission communities: a small body of faithful creating its own place of worship through sustained effort. The present building embodies not only a construction date but also the accumulated work of several generations through rice-saving campaigns, side jobs, house Masses, and support from the parish and diocese. What is especially important in this process is that the community existed before it had a church building: prayer in homes and visiting Masses created the community first. Land purchase, jurisdictional change, and construction came later as its institutional and physical consolidation. The dedication of 1992 is therefore better understood not as the beginning of a new community but as the moment when a long-existing community finally received a permanent home.
