Bukmyeon Catholic Church

History & origins

The present church building of Bukmyeon Parish was completed in 1998. Architectural material from Catholic GoodNews describes the church, designed by architect Kim Jeong-sin, as using a nearly square plan set on a diagonal, with the seating arranged in a fan shape toward the altar. A freestanding bell tower evokes the image of a lighthouse, while exposed concrete and earthen brick are used together in the interior.

The community was formally organized on October 3, 1999. The historical archive of the Diocese of Andong records that Bukmyeon was established that day as a quasi-parish and that Father John the Apostle Lee Gi-jeong of the Archdiocese of Seoul became its first pastor. In other words, the worship space was prepared first and was soon followed by an independent pastoral structure.

After its period as a quasi-parish, Bukmyeon was elevated to a full parish on April 24, 2005. The Diocese of Andong’s parish chronology distinguishes this date as the formal establishment of Bukmyeon Parish. From then on, it developed as the independent parish serving the northern part of Uljin.

The history of Bukmyeon therefore proceeds through the construction of a new church in the late 1990s, the establishment of the quasi-parish, and its elevation to parish status in 2005. The lighthouse-like bell tower and the interior focused toward the altar also show how the newly forming parish expressed its identity as a liturgical community through architecture. Taken together, the sequence of construction and canonical organization shows that Bukmyeon did not emerge all at once but developed in stages. The 1998 church provided a physical center, the quasi-parish established in 1999 created a framework for independent pastoral life, and the 2005 elevation completed its status as a parish. The distinctive architecture became a visible sign through which this new community expressed its identity in the region.
