Acheon Mission

History & origins

Catholic faith began to take root in Acheon-ri in the late nineteenth century. According to a 2026 Catholic Peace Broadcasting report on the mission station's history, early Catholics including Lee Yeong-bok (Simon), Kim Han-gu (Joseph), and Kim Dong-cheol (Matthew) traveled to Catholic villages in the nearby Gaeun area, learned the catechism, received baptism, and then shared the faith in their own village. They gathered on Sundays at Kim Han-gu's home for prayer, and as the number of believers gradually increased, the need for a formally organized mission station became clear.

Official information from the Diocese of Andong and the Catholic report both give October 1905 as the establishment of Acheon Mission Station. Fr. Kim Seong-hak, the first pastor of Gimcheon Parish, organized the mission in the area then known as Gamba-u, and a private house was initially purchased and adapted for use as the mission station. In a rural community without a resident priest, the mission station became the center for Sunday prayer, catechesis, preparation for seasonal confession, and the sacraments, providing the structure through which local Catholics could sustain their own community.

As the community grew, efforts were made to obtain a separate mission-station building. Catholic reporting records that a new building was erected on land donated by lay leader Lee Gyu-gwon (John) and other Catholics and dedicated on December 8, 1935. The building combined Korean traditional and Western architectural features, and parts of its old timber structure remain visible, preserving the atmosphere of a rural Catholic mission building from that period.

Acheon Mission Station continued through later changes in parish organization and today remains under Hamchang Parish. The path from lay evangelization in the late nineteenth century, through formal establishment in 1905 and the dedication of the building in 1935, shows that the history of Acheon was shaped above all by the voluntary faith, offerings, and perseverance of local Catholics rather than by the work of any single cleric.
